endangered animal collages
ART 7
How can art be utilized to understand the many reasons for endangered species? This project was inspired by a series of silkscreened endangered animal portraits by the pop artist Andy Warhol. The project began with students being shown Warhol’s work and reading about the Red List, a world- wide survey of the status of animal populations. Students picked an animal to develop as a colorful collage and do research on for a short report. |
architectural relief mural
CERAMICS
How can students collaborate on a ceramic project that combines art skills with elements of history and world cultures? Student work began by researching and identifying architectural styles throughout time and across the globe. They then created 3 low- level relief ceramic tiles that visually respond to the different styles. The students worked cooperatively to design and combine each individual tile to create one large wall unit to be installed outside the world cultures classroom at Pittsfield Middle High School. |
yearbook

BUSINESS PLAN project
ACCOUNTING
How do entrepreneurs start from an idea and build it into a business? Upon successful completion of this course, students will have gained an understanding of basic accounting and how it relates to business decisions. This course will provide basic knowledge of accounting and an idea of what it would be like to be employers and employees in the business environment. Accounting is a systematic method of keeping, planning, analyzing, and interpreting financial records of a business. Accounting will allow the student to build on basic math skills while learning overall accounting concepts, principles, and accounting procedures. This course is designed to help students learn how accounting relates to different careers, learn accounting terminology, and apply accounting procedures. The final project in Accounting is a completed Business Plan in three parts: the plan must include a description and analysis of their business, a proposed marketing plan, and a proposed financing plan. |
middle school career and technology
How do your interests and aptitudes shape what you want to have for a career as an adult? The Final project in Middle School Career class takes everything we have learned about the 16 career clusters and explores what the student might want to do for a career. It is an important project to do as an eighth grader because it will help their high school advisor with what classes or opportunities they can take in high school to help give them a jump start on their goals. The class also has a technology component so the final project is a power point researching the career they might like but adds in a video component and a voice recording talking the watcher through their PowerPoint. The power point also describes the path it might take to get there, the working conditions of their chosen job, the job salary and outlook, and what educational requirements there might be.

One point perspective
PRINCIPLES OF ART
How does perspective drawing create the illusion of space? Students were introduced to the art concepts of horizon line, vanishing point and orthogonal lines in creating their three dimensional spaces. Principles of Art students worked on city scenes while Painting and drawing students created “wide angle” letters in 3 and 4 point perspective. |
personalized color wheels
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
How can creating a color wheel aid in helping artists understand the relationships that all colors have with each other? This project developed by a desire to include more personnel expression into a traditional color wheel project. Color Theory is an important part of the curriculum in Principles of Art and Design. Students choose a personal element or symbol and made a stencil of it. The stencil was utilized to design a color wheel illustrating the 12 basic hues: 3 primary, 3 secondary and 6 tertiary. |
2D-3D REALISM TO ABSTRACTION
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
What are the design differences between the two-dimensional picture plane and a three- dimensional artwork utilizing volume, space, and structure. Many of the problems that art students have with three-dimensional design courses can be traced to their having never grasped the basic differences in conceptual orientation between 2-D and 3-D experience. The idea of this project is to provide a bridge between the relatively familiar territory of the flat picture plane to the "new" territory of the third dimension.Utilizing white foam core students will translate drawings into 3 dimensional relief sculptures. Students are asked to think of three levels of height for the sculptures similar to topographic mapping. The sculptures can utilize additions to the material or subtractions to make the forms more interesting. The three final relief sculptures will be pinned together on a larger area for presentation. |
INVENTED CREATURES
MIDDLE SCHOOL ART
How can creating a fantastic beast inspire our storytelling skills and imaginations? Like the mythic chimera, students were asked to create a creature utilizing parts of 3 different animals. Students wrote a five paragraph story on the creature that included a physical description of the creature, behaviors and habitats, and a short myth about the creature. POETS AND PRINTMAKERSLEARNING STUDIO
What are the qualities of good art and writing and how does one intentionally use these qualities to create beautiful expressions of ideas and feelings? How do writers and artists inspire each other? PMHS English and Art teachers collaborated to work with student artists and poets in exploriing words and images. |
